ABOUT TANZANIA

Tanzania is Africa’s visual masterpiece. It is a country of magnificent natural splendor, astounding wildlife, seductive beaches, charming ancient towns, archaeological sites and geological wonders. Home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, this majestic site rises from lush, grassy plains and towers over the land.

Its snow-capped peak is a sight to behold. Kilimanjaro is highly accessible for most with physical and mental strength and standing on the roof of Africa is a life-changing experience for all fortunate ones. Be sure to learn more of some of the 120+ tribes and tuck your fingers into a local meal of ugali – a maize dish, which is usually accompanied by meat, fish and/or spinach. The ideal bush and beach destination, visitors to Tanzania can witness the mighty herds of the Great Migration thundering across the Serengeti plains and end the unforgettable safari with a serene beach holiday on Zanzibar, the intoxicatingly beautiful and exotic Spice Island.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Getting around: Tanzania has in general very friendly and peaceful people. You might hear ‘karibu’ a lot, which means ‘welcome’ and is a sign of cultural hospitality. This invitation can be for entering a shop, house or sharing a meal. Feel free to accept or decline politely with ‘asante sana’ (thanks a lot). As in many impoverished countries, where income gaps are huge, sensible caution should always be exercised. Before leaving your hotel, get advice on places to visit and avoid isolated areas if you
are alone, especially after dark.

Photography Please be sensitive when photographing people. It is courteous to ask permission before snapping away. Health Requirements Preventative measures should be taken against malaria. It is advised that you consult a physician regarding malaria prophylactics and other vaccinations. Please note that a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travelers coming from a yellow-fever infected country in Africa or Americas, unless you stayed in airport transit.

Money The local currency is Tanzanian Shilling (int. TZS and locally Tsh), which is accepted everywhere. Hotels, tourist companies and shops usually accept USD or Euro. There are exchange offices in most cities that accept major currencies and offer good exchange rates. Even Traveler’s Cheques are exchanged, at a lower rate though. ATMs are available in large cities while maximum withdrawal per session is restricted to 400 000 Tsh (~$260). Get information from your bank/credit card provider about withdrawal fees and daily withdrawal limits in foreign countries.

Domestic flights Baggage on domestic flights is strictly limited to 15kg per person (including hand luggage) in smaller soft bags. Any excess baggage could be charged by the airline at check-in. Required documents – Passport (valid more than 6 months after your arrival) – Valid visa (available at entry points) – Insurance documents with emergency numbers – Yellow fever certificate of immunization if necessarily Make copies of passport, TZ visa, airline tickets/schedule, and traveler’s cheque numbers. Leave a copy with someone at home and put a copy in a separate place in your luggage. If necessary, confirm your return ticket upon arrival at your airline’s counter.

Tips: Use a scanner to make digital copies of passport and important documents. Email them to yourself so the documents are accessible online at any time.
